Spanish language tutoring really helps!

Spanish language tutoring is a great way to improve your skills when you don't have time for classes or you want to get fluent fast. Not only is it fun and effective, it's a great way to make a new friend in a new language.

There are lots of ways to find the right tutor for you--keep reading.

I recently spent two weeks at a fabulous language school in Cuernavaca, Mexico, called CETLALIC. I got one-on-one and small-group instruction, and I stayed with an amazing family of artists and actors. My best memory of CETLALIC, though, is laughing and trying to speak my bad Spanish at the same time. :) There are lots of schools throughout the Spanish-speaking world that offer access to great native speaking tutors.

Peer tutoring in languages

For those of us lucky enough to live in a place where people immigrate from all over the world, finding a language practice partner is a good way to get informal instruction and language practice.

A few tips for success:

Find someone with similar interests so you have a lot to talk about.

Make a specific commitment with an end time ("we're going to practice for an hour every Tuesday for two months") so you don't have to "break up" with your practice partner

Have fun by grabbing a bite to eat or sharing a coffee

Make sure you both know what you want to gain from the experience before you start

Classes are fun, too

Many of my friends have taken Spanish classes at community colleges. It's a cheap way to get a great education, and classes are offered at lots of different times. Of course, it's not as personalized as one-on-one coaching, but can still be a great resources. If you're in San Francisco, check out City College of San Francisco.
