The first question you'll want to answer as you begin your search is whether you're interested in an advanced degree focusing on research or educational practice.

An Ed.D. is a doctorate that focuses on applied best practices in education. Those who pursue an Ed.D. tend to have an interest in becoming a school principal or administrator, leading teachers in becoming their best.

The Ph.D. is focused mostly on research. There is plenty of overlap between the two degrees, but generally a Ph.D. is about education research. If research is your passion, then this is the right doctorate for you. Typically, a Ph.D. in Education leads to a position as a Professor of Education at a university, though more hands-on work is also an option.

Where to get your doctorate? Online, on campus, or some hybrid?

You've got a lot of good options these days. You can earn doctor degrees in Education the traditional way -- by attending classes full-time at a nearby university, or by relocating to be near the institution of your choice. But doctor degrees in education are also available online and through distance learning programs. Let's explore the options:

* Distance Education refers to attending a school that isn't necessarily located where you live. I earned my master's degree at a distance education program and loved it. We corresponded with professors during the academic year and attending two in-person, eight-day residencies annually. Schools set up distance learning programs in a variety of ways.

* Online Education means almost all your schooling takes place on the Internet. You'll have an interface that allows you to stay in touch with professors and peers, and you may do chat rooms, video chat (such as Skype), online lectures or presentations, and more. This can be very convenient for working professionals and parents.

* Campus-Based Programs mean you are part of an in-person school community. This can be wonderful for building a personal network, especially if you intend to continue your career in the community where the school is located. Many campus-based programs today offer some "hybrid" options so that some coursework can be done online.

If you can't quit your job or you have family responsibilities, online or distance learning can be a great option. If you thrive in a classroom environment, go for the on-campus programs. In my search box above, you can choose to search for either option or both. Convenient, right?
