If you're thinking about earning a Bachelor of Education degree, chances are you have lots of questions. I'm a teacher, and I'm here to help.

The first set of questions are for you:

What age(s) do you want to teach?

What subjects interest you? (If you already have a degree in a subject area, such as English or Science, you may want to focus on that along with your Bachelor of Education degree.)

What type of school would suit you best -- online, on-campus, or some hybrid? If you are working or a full-time parent, online or flexible options may work best for you.

Are you interested in teaching in a special area, such as health education, the arts, or physical education? If so, you'll want to find a program to suit your needs.

What are your career ambitions? Do you want to focus on classroom teaching, or are you also interested in curriculum and research?

Now, how to find the right program for you? Research!

As a teacher, you're going to give out lots of homework. Now, it's your turn. Most teachers got into the job because they like to help, so find some teachers to talk to. Ask them how they got into their particular field in education, whether they have a Bachelor of Education degree (some choose instead to pursue a different college major and then return to school for a Master's in Education separately).

My top 3 questions to ask teachers:

1) What did you like best about your experience as an undergraduate? What topics helped you most as a classroom teacher?

2) Do you think a Bachelor of Education Degree is enough, or should I pursue a Master's Degree as well?

3) If you had to do your education over again, what would you change?

It's a brave new world in education degrees!

Bachelor of Education Degree

What your colleagues may not be able to tell you is that it's a whole new world in education these days. Distance and online degrees have become respected ways to learn, and there are many excellent options to choose from.

I returned to school for a master's degree at a college that offers distance education. I loved it because I was able to continue working while studying during the academic year, but I dropped everything for eight days, twice per year, to do an intensive residency with professors and fellow students.

Here are some general terms to help you choose the right fit for you:

* Distance Education refers to attending a school that isn't necessarily located where you live. I earned my master's degree at a distance education program and loved it. We corresponded with professors during the academic year and attending two in-person, eight-day residencies annually. Schools set up distance learning programs in a variety of ways.

* Online Education means almost all your schooling takes place on the Internet. You'll have an interface that allows you to stay in touch with professors and peers, and you may do chat rooms, video chat (such as Skype), online lectures or presentations, and more. This can be very convenient for working professionals and parents.

* Campus-Based Programs mean you are part of an in-person school community. This can be wonderful for building a personal network, especially if you intend to continue your career in the community where the school is located. Many campus-based programs today offer some "hybrid" options so that some coursework can be done online.

For me, the experience of distance education was fantastic. I got a great education and it qualified me for excellent jobs, including the one I have now teaching English at a community college.
